Push Out Into Deep Water

Today’s Community Scripture – 1/24/2025

Simon said, “Master, we’ve been fishing hard all night and haven’t caught even a minnow. But if you say so, I’ll let out the nets.” It was no sooner said than done—a huge haul of fish, straining the nets past capacity. They waved to their partners in the other boat to come help them. They filled both boats, nearly swamping them with the catch. Simon Peter, when he saw it, fell to his knees before Jesus. “Master, leave. I’m a sinner and can’t handle this holiness. Leave me to myself.” When they pulled in that catch of fish, awe overwhelmed Simon and everyone with him. It was the same with James and John, Zebedee’s sons, coworkers with Simon. Jesus said to Simon, “There is nothing to fear. From now on you’ll be fishing for men and women.” They pulled their boats up on the beach, left them, nets and all, and followed him.

– Reflection:

                Push Out Into Deep Water

Simon Peter knew something miraculous had happened but also that they were in the presence of someone extraordinary. At that moment, Simon Peter feels unworthy, aware of all that is sinful in him. He demands that Jesus depart from him. In the face of all that is miraculous, being in the presence of the living God, we often do the same. When called to discipleship, we feel unworthy. We dismiss the call, turn away, distract ourselves, or pick it apart, hoping God will depart. Jesus does not depart from Simon Peter but acknowledges his fear and continues. Jesus reveals the potential he sees in Simon Peter and invites him to something more than fishing. More than his current life. Of course, he is afraid, and so are we.

– Where do we go from here?

For Simon Peter, the only response is obedience and commitment. Jesus extends this call to us, recognizing our potential and hope. It is our choice to walk with him and discover who we are and what our purpose is during our time here. How will you respond in 2025?

– Our Prayer for Today

Father, fear takes up so much space in our minds. God, give us the courage to be obedient. Help us to lean into discipleship and step forward in love. In the name of the one who calls us, Amen.
